What Happened to Kilyn Lewis

Kilyn Lewis was a 37-year-old African American who was murdered by the Aurora Police Department. This is the same police department responsible for the murders of Elijah McClain, Jor’Dell Richardson, and many others.

Due to a pattern of misconduct and excessive force, the Aurora Police Department has been placed under a consent decree by the Colorado Department of Justice. This decree mandates reforms and increased oversight to address systemic issues within the department.

The murder of Kilyn E. Lewis makes it clear that the Aurora Police Department is in clear violation of the consent decree.

THE OBITUARY OF KILYN E. LEWIS

Kilyn E. Lewis, born on March 18, 1987, in Denver, Colorado to his parents, LaRonda Jones and Robert Lewis Jr. He was raised with his siblings, Kiawa, Keyair, KeyRon, Jonathan, Kieshia, LaRonda “Moosh” and LaKyla.

As a child, Kilyn loved riding his bike, camping, fishing and taking things apart, he received a boombox one Christmas that he took the speakers out of and connected them to his bike. Those who knew him would say that he always kept the “beats” with his bicycle. In addition, Kilyn enjoyed spending time with his stepdad. One day, Kilyn and Keyair came running to the house and Kilyn yelled “Dad! Dad! The cow talked to us." His grandfather said "What did he say?" Kilyn replied "He said 'hey little boy'," and Keyair said "It talk to me too" and the grandfather asked, "What did it say to you?" Keyair replied, "It said 'moo'." Their grandfather asked, "What did you do?" Keyair said "we moved out the way" everybody busted out laughing.

AURORA CITY COUNCIL

MEMBERS OF THE LEWIS FAMILY AND NETWORK CAME FROM ACROSS THE NATION TO SAY GOODBYE TO THE LOVE THAT KILYN LEWIS HELD FOR THOSE HE CAME ACROSS.

THE MARCH FOR JUSTICE

We march because Kilyn Lewis deserved better. We march because the truth matters. We march because justice will not be handed to us—we must demand it.

What You Need to Know

The Aurora Police Department wants to criminalize Kilyn Lewis, but here’s the undeniable truth:

  • Kilyn Lewis was unarmed when he was shot by the police.

  • Kilyn's hands were in the air and he was in surrender when Michael Dieck shot him

  • Michael Dieck had a NON-LETHAL weapon when he arrived on scene and switched to a lethal weapon without seeing any signs of threat from Kilyn

  • Officers arrived on scene in unmarked vehicles screaming multiple commands

  • Officer Michael Dieck is the only officer to fire the fatal shot

The Demands

Kilyn Lewis's family will continue to consider ALL remedies for justice and restoration of their family. At this time, Kylin’s family through community advocacy is demanding the following, knowing that this is just the beginning:

  • Retract the Mischaracterization of Kilyn Lewis – Leadership members of the city of Aurora have demonized Kilyn during public City Council meetings and have refused to retract their statements.

  • Fire the Officer Who Killed Kilyn – The officer must be immediately terminated for violating protocol and switching his weapon of choice from a non-lethal option to a lethal option

  • Full Transparency into the Investigation – The Consent Decree Monitor provided multiple questions surrounding the shooting of Kilyn Lewis, yet none of those questions have been formally presented to the community, nor have they been answered.

  • Attorney General Involvement in Consent Decree Failures – The Aurora City Council must invite in the Attorney General's Office to formally discuss the failures of the consent decree and negotiate a path forward that will hold the Aurora Police accountable of the expectations of the Consent Decree.

This fight will not end here. More demands will come as this journey unfolds. Until then, we march, we speak, and we refuse to be silent.

GET INVOLVED

Justice does not move without the power of the people. Thesse families cannot fight this fight alone—they need all of us. When they call for a rally, we need to be there. When it’s time to march, we need to stand shoulder to shoulder. When systems try to silence the truth, our voices must rise even louder. When we stand toe-to-toe with those who oppose justice, our numbers will matter!

Each of these people we are fighting for were preparing for a future that was stolen from them. They leave behind mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, partners, children—who will have to navigate without their loved ones because of the reckless decisions of the police.

And as we move, we do so with purpose. We will be peaceful, and powerful. We will be relentless, and disciplined. We will be loud, and strategic.

And we will not stop until justice is served.
